Start with the use case, then the material name
KeeperSource offers German Contact, Giga, Aqua, Mega and Super Soft latex options. Select the palm for an identified player and playing environment. Write down whether the glove is for repeated academy training, recreational use or a match-focused collection. Add the expected surface, climate, care routine and replacement expectations.
uhlsport distinguishes grip-oriented and abrasion-oriented foams, including surface-specific options. Reusch presents dry grip, wet grip and durability as separate considerations. These are useful evaluation categories, not a shared rating scale or evidence that any untested private label material is equivalent to a branded compound.
Build a palm-material comparison sheet
Ask each potential supplier to answer the same questions in writing. A familiar-sounding name is insufficient if you cannot connect it to a repeatable specification and an approved physical reference.
| Decision | Information to request | Approval evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Surface and wet/dry positioning | A sample trial matching the use case |
| Palm construction | Latex layer and backing described separately | Cross-section or agreed measurement method |
| Material identity | Supplier grade, material code and available documents | Code tied to the sample and quotation |
| Repeatability | Substitution policy and batch identification | Written change-approval requirement |
| Care | Preparation, washing and storage instructions | Instructions reviewed with the final material |
Thickness is one field, not the whole specification
When a quotation gives a thickness, clarify what is being measured. Ask whether the figure refers to the grip layer alone or includes backing. Specify where and how it should be measured, and agree a tolerance. Comparing two headline numbers without this detail may compare different constructions.
Also record the palm color, surface finish, wrap areas and any protective film. Approve the finished glove rather than a loose material swatch alone. The swatch cannot show whether a thumb wrap restricts movement or whether the assembled palm wrinkles during a catch.
Run a useful comparison trial
Create a simple protocol before testing. Use comparable balls, preparation routines and training sessions. Record surface, weather, session length and cleaning method. If you compare candidate palms, try to keep the glove pattern and other components consistent.
Ask testers to report handling confidence, movement and visible wear separately. Photograph the same palm areas before use and after each session. One sticky impression at unboxing cannot answer how a glove will feel after repeated use. A short trial supports a development decision; it does not establish a universal lifespan or laboratory performance result.
- Label every sample with its material code and revision.
- Record preparation and care, including any cleaning product.
- Keep observations separate from advertising claims.
- Agree what counts as an unacceptable assembly issue.
- Retain an unused reference pair for comparison.
Verify provenance before putting it on a product page
If origin matters to your positioning, request documents supporting the exact claim and connect them to the quoted material. A supplier's use of a word such as 'German' does not itself verify a manufacturer's identity, a country of manufacture or authorization to use a proprietary material name.
Make substitutions an explicit approval point. A revised color or a repeat order should not create an undocumented change in palm material. Your purchasing record should identify the approved code, permitted alternatives if any, and who can authorize a change. Keep unresolved claims off packaging and sales copy until they can be supported.
