Start with the child, not an adult size shortcut
A junior glove should be considered around the intended wearer’s hands and ability to put it on. Age labels can organise a team list, but they do not establish fit. Ask which model is being tried, how the hands were measured and whether adjacent sizes are available for comparison.
For a club purchase, a shared graphic does not mean junior and adult gloves use the same pattern. Review finger length, palm width, thumb position and wrist opening with representative junior keepers. Record their feedback before assigning the whole squad to a size.
Run a short, calm fitting routine
Try the glove using its intended entry method. Let the child open and close the hand, adjust the wrist if supplied, and handle a ball. Ask where it presses or moves rather than asking only whether it feels good. Check both hands and avoid selecting an uncomfortable fit simply to create room for growth.
- Record fingertip space and pressure.
- Check thumb movement and palm movement.
- Review whether the child can manage the entry and fastening.
- Compare a neighbouring size when the fit is uncertain.
Choose features for their actual purpose
Finger-support elements, the finger cut and wrist closure are separate decisions. A child may find one arrangement easier to move in than another. Review the sample rather than assuming every junior needs the same support system. Finger inserts do not create a guarantee against injury.
Ask where and how often the child plays. Repeated artificial-grass training creates a different wear discussion from an occasional grass match. If considering training and match pairs, compare that plan with the family or club budget and the actual session routine.
Make care an adult-supported habit
Read the instructions supplied with the actual glove. Help younger players clean gently and allow gloves to air dry away from direct heat. Take damp pairs out of the kit bag after transport. A written routine on the club noticeboard is easier to follow than relying on a child to remember a verbal explanation.
For a team order, confirm sizes before printing names. Keep one list of pair quantities, approved sizes and player text. Plan a small, deliberate approach to replacements and new joiners rather than assuming every child will keep the same fit all season.
